What Is Precision Skating?

First I suppose I should give a brief explanation as to what precision skating, or precision team skating as it is officially known, actually is. Precision skating ' involves a team of twelve to twenty four skaters skating various manoeuvres and formations to music of the team's own choice ... Precision refers to the importance of unison, accuracy of formations and synchronisation of the team.'

In Great Britain there are 4 levels of competition: Novice, Junior, Senior and Adult, although there are no British Championships at the Adult level.

Members of a novice team must be under 15 years of age on 1st July preceding the competition, novice teams only skate one programme. The number of team members (not including reserves) has to be between 12 and 24.

Members of a junior team must be over 12 years of age, but under 19 on 1st July preceding the competition, and skate two programmes, a short programme, lasting 2 minutes 40 seconds, and a long programme, lasting 4 minutes. The number of team members (not including reserves) has to be between 12 and 20.

Members of a senior team must be over 12 years of age on 1st July preceding the competition and the team skate two programmes, a short programme lasting 2 minutes 40 seconds, and a long programme lasting 4 minutes 30 seconds. The number of members has to be between 16 and 24.
